Summer Essentials Eczema Relief Kit: Jacinta Mullens

Summer is a time for sunshine, outdoor activities, and beach days, but for those with eczema, the heat,
humidity, and increased exposure to environmental triggers can make the season challenging. Flare-
ups can be more frequent, and managing symptoms like itching, and irritation becomes more critical.
That’s why having a well-stocked “Summer Essential Eczema Relief Kit” is a game-changer.

Here are some tips to help reduce the risk of flaring up this summer.

1. Fragrance-Free, Mineral-Based Sunscreen

Protecting your skin from the sun is a priority, especially for sensitive, eczema-prone skin. Fragrance-
free, mineral-based sunscreens
are an excellent option because they provide effective protection
without irritating the skin. Zinc oxide is a gentle natural ingredient that sits on top of the skin and
physically blocks UV rays, making it less likely to cause irritation such as redness or burning
compared to chemical sunscreens, which absorb into the skin. Fragrances are common irritants for
eczema-prone skin. A fragrance-free formula ensures that there are no unnecessary chemicals that
could trigger a reaction. Before applying any new sunscreen, do a patch test on a small area of your
skin to ensure it doesn’t cause irritation.

2. Hydrating Mist

A hydrating mist can offer instant relief on a hot summer day. Hydrating sprays that contain
ingredients like aloe vera provide a quick cooling effect and can help soothe inflamed or irritated skin.
It’s great for a mid-day refresh or when you feel your skin getting too dry or itchy from the heat.

3. Light, Breathable Clothing

Certain types of fabrics can be a trigger for eczema sufferers. Go for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics
like cotton, bamboo, or linen
that allow your skin to breathe and reduce friction. Tight clothing and
synthetic fabrics can trap heat and sweat, worsening eczema symptoms.

4. Cool Compresses or Ice Packs

Heat and sweat can cause the skin to become itchier in individuals with eczema. Cool compresses can
be an effective and soothing way to manage eczema flare-ups. Some benefits of cool compresses for
eczema include reducing inflammation, relives itching, calms irritated skin, and hydrates the skin.
Prepare the compress by soaking a soft, clean cloth in cool water. Wring out excess water so the cloth
is damp. Apply to the affected area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes or until there is relief. Reapply as
needed. Moisturise afterward once the cool compress has been removed. Cool compresses are a
simple, affordable, and effective home remedy for managing discomfort associated with eczema,
especially during flare-ups.

5. Water Bottle

Staying hydrated from the inside is just as important as moisturising the outside. Dehydration can
worsen eczema by making the skin more prone to dryness and cracking. Always have a water bottle
handy
to remind yourself to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Hydration is essential for
managing eczema, as well-hydrated skin helps maintain its natural barrier and prevents flare-ups.

6. Moisturise Regularly

Summer heat and frequent swimming can dry out your skin, so keeping it moisturised is key. Pack a
fragrance-free moisturiser cream to lock in moisture and strengthen your skin’s natural barrier. Reapply throughout the day, especially after being in water or exposed to the sun. Moisturiser can be
applied to the skin before sunscreen to lock in hydration and create an extra barrier between your skin
and potential irritants.

Try adding these essential items into your routine this summer to help reduce those unwanted flare-
ups from the heat. Being prepared in advance can help minimise stress during the warmer months and
ensure you stay as comfortable as possible.
