Looking for a delicious homemade dip without sesame? This easy sesame-free hummus is smooth, creamy and full of flavour, using just a handful of everyday ingredients. Made with chickpeas, garlic and rice bran oil, it’s a simple alternative to traditional hummus without the need for tahini.

At the Eczema Association, we understand that some individuals and families living with eczema also manage food allergies or dietary restrictions. This recipe is naturally free from sesame, dairy and gluten when prepared with suitable ingredients, making it a useful option for those avoiding these foods.
It’s also quick to prepare, requires no cooking when using ready-cooked chickpeas, and is perfect for afternoon snacks, entertaining or adding to a family lunch.
Serves: Approximately 4 | Preparation time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 0 minutes | Total time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
- 1½ cups cooked chickpeas
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- 1 tbsp rice bran oil
- 4–5 tbsp filtered water, approximately 60–75 mL
- Quality sea salt, to taste
- Chopped fresh chives, rinsed, to garnish (optional)
Method
- Prepare the ingredients. If using canned chickpeas, drain and rinse thoroughly. Peel and mince the garlic.
- Blend until smooth. Place the chickpeas, garlic, rice bran oil, filtered water and salt into a food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Adjust the consistency. Add a little extra water, one splash at a time, if you prefer a thinner hummus.
- Garnish and serve. Transfer to a serving bowl and top with chopped fresh chives, if desired.
Tips
- Storage: Keep refrigerated in a sealed, airtight container and consume within 4 days, as advised in the original recipe.
- Adjust the texture: For a smoother hummus, blend for a little longer and add water gradually until you reach your preferred consistency.
- Check ingredient labels: If preparing this recipe for someone with a diagnosed food allergy, check packaged ingredients for allergens and possible cross-contact.
- Rice bran oil: The original recipe recommends rice bran oil for people managing salicylate intake. Anyone following a medically prescribed low-salicylate diet should confirm the suitability of individual ingredients with their healthcare professional.
