With a soft chocolate sponge on top and a rich, velvety sauce underneath, this classic oven-baked dessert is perfect for cosy nights in or when you’re craving something sweet and satisfying.

Made using simple pantry staples and gluten-free self-raising flour, this recipe is easy to prepare and bakes beautifully in individual ramekins. It’s a family-friendly dessert that delivers indulgent chocolate flavour while remaining accessible for those managing dietary needs.

Ingredients

For the pudding

  • 25 g butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp Dutch cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup caster sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup gluten-free self-raising flour

For the sauce

  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Dutch cocoa powder
  • 1 ¼ cups boiling water

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease six ¾-cup oven-safe ramekins.
  2. In a bowl, combine the melted butter, cocoa powder, caster sugar and milk.
  3. Sift in the gluten-free self-raising flour and mix until just combined.
  4. Spoon the mixture evenly into the prepared ramekins.
  5. Mix the brown sugar and cocoa powder together and sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  6. Carefully drizzle the boiling water over the top, do not stir.
  7. Bake for approximately 30 minutes, until the sponge is cooked and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  8. Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream or a dairy-free alternative.
