Eczema Friendly Easter Baking: Simple Ingredient Swaps for Healthier Treats

Easter baking is a special tradition for many families, but if you or your child live with eczema, certain ingredients can sometimes trigger inflammation or discomfort. The good news is that small ingredient swaps can make a big difference. By choosing refined sugar free sweeteners, alternative flours, plant based milks and healthier fats, you can still enjoy delicious Easter treats while being mindful of sensitive skin.

This guide shares simple eczema friendly ingredient swaps that can help you create healthier Easter recipes without compromising flavour.

Eczema Friendly Sugar alternatives

INGREDIENTREFINED SUGAR-FREE ALTERNATIVE
Rice malt syrupSwap rice malt syrup with the same quantity of maple syrup or raw honey.
Maple syrupSwap maple syrup with the same quantity of raw honey or rice malt syrup.
90% dark chocolateSwap with any dark chocolate.
Dark chocolateIf you have cacao powder + any healthy oil that is solid at room temperature (eg cacao butter or unprocessed coconut oil) then you can make your own homemade dark chocolate alternative.
Cacao powder & Cacao butter mixIf you don’t have any dark chocolate or cacao you can always use milk chocolate (just be mindful that the sugar content will be much higher).

Eczema Friendly flour swaps

INGREDIENTHEALTHY FLOUR ALTERNATIVE
Buckwheat flourReplace with either quinoa flour, brown rice flour or a gluten-free flour blend.
Wholemeal spelt flourSwap spelt flour with any wholemeal flour to maintain a similar flavour/texture.
Wholemeal flourReplace wholemeal flour with any non-self-raising flour (just bear in mind white flour reduces the fibre content of your healthy Easter recipes).
Almond mealSwap almond meal with ground sunflower seeds. You can use a blender to bring sunflower seeds to a flour like consistency, otherwise a mortar or pestle or coffee grinder can do the trick.

Eczema Friendly butter swaps

INGREDIENTHEALTHY BUTTER ALTERNATIVES
Cacao butterSwap for cacao butter (ideally a plain version, with no added sugar). Or, swap with coconut oil (but note this may change the consistency).
Cashew butterSwap with almond butter, peanut butter, sunflower butter or tahini.

Note: If you’ve only got dairy butter, ideally grassfed/organic, go ahead but please bear in mind it will contain a lot more fat than a nut butter and could a create slightly oily consistency (and, of course, the recipe will no longer be vegan-friendly!)

Eczema Friendly milk swaps

INGREDIENTHEALTHY MILK ALTERNATIVE
Coconut milkSwap with coconut cream, and just water it down to a similar consistency as coconut milk.
Almond milkReplace with any plant milk of your choice.

*These ingredient swaps focus on whole foods and less processed options that may be gentler for some people living with eczema.

*As with all foods, individual triggers can vary. If you or your child have food sensitivities, adjust ingredients as needed.
